I am finally awake. I was up til 3am editing music last night, and my brain still feels kind of waterlogged. I guess this is how I know I'm not a kid anymore, huh?

Ugh, polar vortex time again. It's below freezing here, and worse, according to the weather report it's only going to be colder between now and Sunday.

I am going to spend four days on the couch wrapped in blankets, aren't I?

Yesterday was Oldest Son's birthday. Today is Younger Son's birthday.

Go many board games. So much cake.

I think maybe my boba packets aren't good anymore. I kind of want to open them but I can also imagine the smell and don't want to know if I'm right.

Argh my kid is arguing with his teacher about the riots at the Capitol.

Yes, kid, I'm glad you've listened to and absorbed my politics, and I'm sorry that your teacher is a magat, but I think we need to work more on power differentials and survival skills.

So this morning I took my work laptop, went down to my office, started it up, and got ready for my first day back at work for a week and a half. I even had a joke ready to deploy about not wanting to work.

Then I checked my calendar and saw that today is still a holiday and I don't have to work until tomorrow. I am feeling kind of deflated now.

Sometimes, everyone else is busy on a Sunday afternoon, and you realize, "I want some pie."

Luckily, I have the means to make this happen. Pie will be out of the oven in about an hour.

Since apparently nine months won't do it, when will I stop leaving my house and getting halfway to the store before I realize I don't have a mask on?

Thanksgiving! I've been cooking all morning, hopefully it will be worth it.

Since I sort of promised @vicorva on birdsite: no pie yet today, but I am making 24-hour salad for tomorrow. What is that, you ask? A family tradition, that's what.

You take grapes, and pineapple chunks, and marshmallows, and then add in whipped cream and custard and chill it over night.

So, no, it's not actually a salad at all. And it's not healthy. But pooh is it tasty and I always make it for Thanksgiving.

My son (who is 11) is part of a class debate in social studies. The topic? "Whether there should be mandatory mask wearing in NYC?"

I am about to scream at the arguments these kids are giving, and that the teacher isn't challenging. Sure, let them debate, but don't let them spread lies!

Once again I ask the age-old software support question: Why on earth did you think that was a reasonable thing to do?

We're running our annual user conference online this year. Which means that instead of flying to California for a week, I'm spending two days on VC all day from my basement.

I can't decide if I'm happy or sad about this.

I did not realize how many things contain the letter "H" until the "H" keycap flew off my keyboard.

I can still make an "H", it's just weird and flow-breaking. And sometimes I jit a "J" instead.

I heard my sixth-grader's science teacher this morning. "I'm glad you're all happy about the election, but you're in the sixth grade, it doesn't affect you."

Sadly, I am not the kind of parent to bust into the VC and let her have it, but I was boiling. I will bet money that half those kids are immigrants or come from immigrant families, and I guarantee the election effects them, through their families if nothing else.

Fed my sourdough starter this morning, this afternoon realized it's about to bubble our of the jar. To the recipe book! Emergency cinnamon rolls, stat!

Trying to imagine a world where actual babies are more like sourdough starters.

"Oh, this baby is great!"
"If you want, I'll feed it extra this week and give you a clone."
"I don't know, aren't they hard to take care of?"
"Nah, feed 'em once a week and make sure to pour off the mysterious liquids that ooze out."
